Why Do You Need to Use PNG File Format in Your Web Design?

The benefits of including PNG image format in web designing over various other formats ;for instance, GIF and JPEG; the image format helps to make really amazing and efficient web graphics that will entice your visitors

The PNG image format was introduced quite a while back; it was brought out in the market in 1995/96 to cover the drawbacks of the traditional GIF image format. However, it did not catch on because the early browsers were not designed to support the advanced attributes of PNG so internet designers and developers were compelled to incorporate it restrictedly. One of the major blocks that marred the features of PNG was with Microsoft's flagship product, Internet Explorer which was by far the most famous browsers of that period; IE had limited provision for PNG support which equated to the fact that the format could only be made use of in the most restricted way. Then, the scene metamorphosed after the availability of IE7; this new offering from Microsoft has aided in increasing the usability of PNGs. So here is a look at three reasons why PNG is one of the most innovative image formats around today:

It is possible to create transparent images or a feature called alpha transparency: When you compare PNG with GIF, it will become apparent that a very distinct advantage with PNG is that you you will be restricted to saving a particular color as transparent in GIF this simply means that you can get the color whether opaque or transparent with just transparency in between; however, with PNG, you get a serious benefit; because the format is capable of producing semi transparent pixels. With this attribute, you can save a PNG file with a soft drop shadow and then float it against any background. Through this feature you will be able to use an image as a background with gradient or a water mark. The format allows for the slow fading of shades from entirely opaque to absolutely transparent, and hence you will be able to view the webpage underneath

They look fabulous: Not only do you get surprising flexibility when using PNG images but also; there are a myriad of other advantages to using this format. For example, if you choose a JPG image, you lose a part of the data from the initial image every time you save the file, so after a while, you will notice a distinct decline in the quality of the pictures. Even if, this problem has now been sorted in the image format and it is possible to store the files without compromising any data, GIF only allows for a limited 256 color palette, which makes it quite ineffective if you want to save a photograph. On the other hand, with PNG, you could get the best benefits of the two file types; you will be provided a full color display like the one used in JPEG images and it also provides managed color palette as seen in GIF files. Also the storage of the file is lossless so the photograph stays as it is even if you save the file several times.

PNG is self optimizing: A major concern that web programmers face on a daily basis is the fact that the brightness and the contrast ratio of the screen has to be regulated to see the the display appropriately; this happens due to the Gamma settings of different monitors. Gamma setting is a technology incorporated to distribute the the light across the display surface. However, different operating systems use varying Gamma settings. So, an image that is color corrected specifically for Windows may not look right on a Mac. Here again, in this situation the flexible PNG picture format can help you out, in PNG, you can store the files with a built in Gamma correction so whatever operating system you are working on; the Gamma settings will be automatically adjusted to display a file with the amazing contrast and brightness.
