Image sizes: 256x256, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, 16x16 File formats: BMP, GIF, PNG, ICO ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Why Should You Use PNG File Format in Your Website Creation? The advantages of incorporating PNG images in web designing over various other formats like GIF and JPEG; the file type can be used to make good and wonderful icons that will wow your customersThe PNG image format was introduced some time ago; it was put forth in the market in 1995/96 to make up for the shortcomings of the the common GIF file format. However, it did not make an impression because the the browsers of the time could not offer support to the progressive features of PNG so internet designers and makers were compelled to use it sparingly. One of the main hindrances faced by the format was Microsoft Internet Explorer which was by far the most famous browsers of that period; IE had very little place for PNG support which meant that the format could only be incorporated to a bare minimum. But, things metamorphosed with the introduction of IE7; this new browser from Microsoft has proved immensely useful in increasing increasing the utility of PNGs. So lets take a look at three reasons why PNG is by far the most useful image formats around today: It is possible to create images that can be superimposed due to their transparency or a feature called alpha transparency: When you analyze the features of GIF and PNG, will notice that one of the major differences is that you will only be able to save a particular color transparently through the use of GIF this equates to the fact that the color can be transformed regardless of it being opaque or transparent with just transparency in between; however, with PNG, you get a distinct advantage; because the format supports semi transparent pixels. This simply means that you can save a PNG file with a soft drop shadow and then fuse it with a background that suits your taste. You can also use the image as a background with gradient or a water mark. The format gives you the option to use the slow fading of shades from completely opaque to see through, exposing the webpage underneath They look spectacular: It is a well known fact that PNG images give you extreme flexibility also; there are several other benefits to incorporating this format. For instance, when you use a JPEG image, you lose a part of the information from the original file every time you save the file, so after a while, you will be able to see a noticeable deterioration in the quality of the media. Even if, this concern has now been sorted in in the file type and you will be able to store the files without sacrificing any details, GIF has a limited color palette of 256, which renders it quite futile if you have to save a snap shot. On the other hand, with PNG, you will get the most desired features of both these formats; you get a full color display like the one used in JPEG file type and it also provides managed color palette a la GIF files. Also the compression of the file is sans loss so the photograph stays put despite innumerable times of saving the file. Self Optimization is possible in PNG: A major concern that web programmers face very often is the issue where the contrast and the brightness of the monitor has to be regulated to see the pictures appropriately; this problem occurs due to various Gamma setting used in monitors from different vendors. Gamma setting is a technology that helps to distribute the the light across the display surface. However, various operating systems use varying Gamma settings. So, a picture that is color corrected specifically for Windows may appear abnormal in Mac. Here again, in this case the versatile PNG format can help you out, in PNG, you can store the files with with a Gamma correction feature that is innate so despite the differences in operating systems; the Gamma settings will be changed on its own to display an image with the perfect contrast and brightness. ![]()
